CYCLONE YASI'S full toll will take months to calculate but its immediate effects are obvious. On parts of the coast between Cairns and Townsville, damage has been widespread, with hundreds of houses destroyed, unroofed or damaged, infrastructure wrecked and crops wiped out. The heartache for householders and farmers whose possessions and investments have been lost will, of course, be great. The repercussions on insurers and on food prices will continue for months or more. More important, though, there have so far been no reports of loss of life or even severe injuries as a result of the worst cyclone in memory. Given the force of the winds when the cyclone hit the coast, and the size of the storm, that is an astonishing achievement.
